Is it possible to over brush your teeth?

It is crucial to look after our mouths, as many potential health implications can stem from having poor oral hygiene. From an early age, we are taught that we must look after our teeth and gums by making sure that we brush our teeth at least twice a day. While most of us follow these general guidelines in brushing our teeth, some of us may be doing more harm than good through overbrushing. Overbrushing wears down tooth enamel and does damage to our gums. Keep reading to discover ways you can avoid damage through overbrushing.

How old is your toothbrush?
Overbrushing can occur by brushing your teeth more often than what is necessary, but also through using toothbrushes that have been worn down. When a toothbrush is first manufactured, a machine is used to ensure that the bristles have the exact same height, even at a microscopic level. During the manufacturing process, the toothbrush bristles are also rounded at the end to lessen the chances of the toothbrush scraping the protective layer of tooth enamel. Whilst you think that your brushing may be doing you good, you may be weakening your teeth and gums by using bristles that are too rough and abrasive.

Don’t brush your teeth after eating anything acidic
It is not recommended to brush your teeth after you have consumed anything that is filled with sugar, carbs or is high in acid. Brushing your teeth straight after you’ve had your morning coffee will increase the chances of you thinning out tooth enamel. It is recommended that you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth, especially if you’ve just eaten something high in acid or sugar.
