Care Instructions to Keep Your Dentures Looking Great
18 January,2021Do you have partial or full dentures and need helpful tips on how to care for them? From brushing daily and rinsing after eating through to soaking them overnight and scheduling regular check-ups with your dentist, there are many things you can do to ensure your dentures last as long as possible. This blog post contains more details about care instructions that will keep your dentures looking great.
Rinse After Eating
Like natural teeth, dentures can trap food debris and other loose particles over time. After meals, it’s recommended that you remove and rinse your dentures with water. This is a quick and easy way to reduce the amount of plaque that builds up. Be sure to place a towel on the bench or fill the sink with water in case you drop your dentures to ensure they don’t break.
Brush at Least Daily
When you remove your dentures, you should clean your mouth before putting them back in. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean any remaining natural teeth along with your tongue, cheeks and palate (the roof of your mouth). Following this, you should gently brush the dentures themselves to remove food, plaque and other deposits. You should also remove residual denture adhesive if used.
Soak Overnight
To ensure dentures retain their shape, it’s important to keep them moist. Salvia does the trick when they’re in your mouth, but they can quickly dry out once removed. While you’re asleep, you should place them in water or a mild denture-soaking solution. Your dentist or the manufacturer of your chosen soaking solution can provide more specific instructions.
Schedule Regular Check-Ups
Dentures need to be examined and professionally cleaned just as often as natural teeth. Scheduling a check-up on a regular basis can identify any issues early on and prevent damage to your dentures. Furthermore, a dentist can ensure the dentures are properly fitted and check to see that your mouth is healthy.
Avoid Abrasive Materials
When caring for your dentures, you should avoid using abrasive materials. This includes stiff-bristled brushes, harsh toothpastes and strong cleaners. In addition, it’s recommended that you avoid using whitening toothpastes containing peroxide, products that contain bleach, and hot or boiling water.
