What Causes TMJ Disorder?
Teeth grinding and clenching is one of the causes of TMJ disorder that can be exacerbated by stress and anxiety. Sleep apnoea, bone diseases and trauma are also some of the other main causes of TMJ disorder. Dysfunction of the TMJ can cause various issues, including difficulty opening and closing your mouth which affects your ability to chew and talk. It can also lead to headaches and migraines; neck or shoulder pain; earaches; locking and clicking of the jaw; and limited range of motion.
Treatment Available at Dental on Clarendon
One of the treatments available to address the muscular component of TMJ Disorder is the injection of muscle relaxants. This can ease pain symptoms for appropriate patients.
This is often used in conjunction with a night guard (splint) therapy and physical self-regulation techniques for those that experience pain from TMJ Disorder.
