    Commonly Asked Questions

What to do in a dental emergency?

    Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain medication, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

    Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently, and keep it moist in milk or water until you can see a dentist.

    Broken or Cracked Tooth
Save any fragments, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress.

    Infection
Seek immediate dental care for an infection, which can lead to severe pain, swelling, and potentially life-threatening complications.

    • Severe pain, swelling, or bleeding that doesn’t stop with basic first aid.
    • Fever, chills, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, which can indicate major complications.
    • Significant swelling of the mouth or face.
    • Trauma to the head, face, jaw, or teeth.

Acting quickly can significantly increase the chances of saving a knocked-out tooth. Here’s what to do

    • Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (the top), avoiding contact with the roots.
    • Rinse it gently with warm water—do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.
    • If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place by gently biting down. If that’s not possible, store the tooth in milk or your saliva in a clean container.
    • See a dentist immediately. The sooner you act, the better the chances of reimplanting the tooth successfully.

Swelling is often caused by infection and can be dangerous. If the swelling affects your eyes or breathing, seek emergency dental care immediately. Avoid applying heat, as it can worsen the infection. Cold compresses may help reduce the swelling until you see a dentist.

Cracks often affect both the inside and outside of the tooth and should be taken seriously. Take the following steps and contact your dentist immediately:

    • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
    • Apply a cold compress if there’s facial trauma.
    • Take acetaminophen to help with pain.
    • Avoid placing painkillers directly on the gum—they can damage soft tissues.
